Hungarian Water Partnership Expands Opportunities in Indonesia and the ASEAN Region

The Hungarian Water Partnership (HWP) was honoured to participate in the Indonesia–Hungary Business Forum on Investment Opportunities in Indonesia’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs), organised with the support of the Embassy of Indonesia in Hungary, the Hungarian Export Promotion Agency (HEPA), and the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI). The delegation included key decision-makers such as Rizal Edwin Manansang, Bambang Wijanarko, and Ngurah Wirawan, representing Indonesia’s National Council for Special Economic Zones and the Batang Industrial Zone.

HWP, Director Angelika Puskás delivered a presentation on Hungarian water-sector expertise and exportable technologies, and then with HWP Co-President Robert Forintos participated in high-level discussions aimed at strengthening economic and technology cooperation between Hungary and Indonesia.

The event brought together Indonesian government representatives, investment promotion agencies, SEZ developers, industry leaders, and Hungarian companies interested in exploring long-term business and investment opportunities in Southeast Asia.

For HWP, the forum represented much more than a networking opportunity. It reinforced the growing role of Hungarian water and environmental technologies in one of the world's most dynamic regions and opened new pathways for cooperation across the ASEAN market.

Building on Proven Success in Southeast Asia

The Hungarian water sector is not entering the region as a newcomer. HWP members have already successfully implemented major infrastructure projects across Southeast Asia, demonstrating the reliability and competitiveness of Hungarian engineering solutions.

Among the most notable examples is the drinking water treatment project in Quang Binh Province, Vietnam, where Hungarian expertise contributed to the design and implementation of a water intake and treatment system serving more than 100,000 people. The project significantly improved access to safe drinking water while supporting regional economic development and infrastructure modernisation.

The project stands as a flagship example of how Hungarian water technologies can create long-term social, environmental, and economic impact in emerging markets.

At the forum, HWP also highlighted its broader regional experience, including water and wastewater treatment projects in Vietnam, Laos, and Indonesia, showcasing the ability of Hungarian companies to deliver integrated solutions ranging from engineering and design to construction, operation, training, and capacity building.

Strong Regional Presence Creates New Opportunities

An important advantage for HWP members is the established presence of Hungarian companies in the ASEAN region.

Through its representative office in Hanoi, Tradeland Vietnam has been managing water-sector projects and supporting Hungarian business activities in Southeast Asia for nearly a decade. This long-standing regional footprint provides valuable local knowledge, business networks, and project implementation capabilities that can help accelerate future market entry for Hungarian companies.

As Indonesia continues to invest heavily in industrial development, urban infrastructure, water management, environmental protection, and climate resilience, significant opportunities are emerging for Hungarian solution providers. During the forum, Indonesian stakeholders repeatedly emphasised that beyond capital investment, they are actively seeking technology transfer, engineering know-how, operational expertise, and innovative solutions—areas where HWP members possess internationally recognised capabilities.

Looking Ahead: Vietnam 2026

The discussions initiated during the forum will continue throughout the coming months as HWP works with Indonesian partners to identify concrete project opportunities and match them with the expertise of its member companies.

As part of this broader regional engagement strategy, HWP is also preparing a dedicated workshop and business networking programme in Vietnam in September 2026. The initiative is expected to bring together Hungarian and Southeast Asian stakeholders from the water, environmental, industrial, and infrastructure sectors, creating a platform for knowledge exchange, partnership development, and project generation across the ASEAN region.

The upcoming Vietnam programme will build on more than a decade of successful Hungarian involvement in Southeast Asia and further strengthen HWP’s mission of promoting sustainable, export-oriented Hungarian water technologies on the global stage.

The Indonesian forum confirmed once again that the ASEAN region continues to offer substantial growth opportunities for Hungarian companies. Through strategic partnerships, proven project references, and a growing regional network, HWP remains committed to helping its members access these opportunities and contribute to the development of sustainable water and environmental infrastructure throughout Southeast Asia.
