HWP Member Collaboration Delivers Successful Water Treatment R&D Project
The Hungarian Water Partnership is proud to highlight another strong example of how collaboration within its professional network can create tangible innovation and market-ready results.
A consortium led by Pureco Ltd., together with Puraset Ltd. and Bay Zoltán Nonprofit Ltd., has successfully completed a three-year research and development project focused on the development of environmentally friendly water purification methods using regenerable, high-efficiency adsorbents.
The project, entitled “Development of environmentally friendly water purification methods to meet international needs through the use of regenerable adsorbents with increased efficiency and production technology”, was implemented under the GINOP PLUSZ-2.1.1-21 – Stimulating Corporate Research, Development and Innovation Activities call of the Széchenyi Plan Plus Economic Development and Innovation Operational Programme Plus. The project ran from 1 April 2022 to 31 March 2025, with activities carried out in Jászfényszaru and Szeged.
From joint expertise to market-ready solutions
The cooperation brought together complementary industrial, technological and research capabilities, demonstrating precisely the type of synergy that the Hungarian Water Partnership aims to foster among its members and professional partners.
The project resulted in the development of a target-specific, market-ready range of water treatment products, supported by proprietary production technologies, measurement and validation results. Importantly, the consortium also developed regeneration technologies and processes designed to reduce the amount of hazardous waste generated during the production, use and regeneration of adsorbent materials.
The R&D programme covered the entire development pathway, from defining research directions and investigating new material compositions to manufacturing technologies, testing, validation and preparation for future market application.
Key areas of work included the development of new adsorbents suitable for water treatment, research into material compositions not currently commercially available, the establishment of measurement and qualification methodologies, and the development of adsorbent regeneration technologies. The consortium also worked on solutions to minimise hazardous waste and tested the developed materials under conditions representative of real-world water treatment operations.
A further important result was the establishment of a technology and adsorbent database, creating a knowledge base that can support future product development and water treatment applications.
Successful completion recognised in 2026
Following the completion of the project in March 2025, the consortium received a positive assessment from the National Research, Development and Innovation Office in July 2026, confirming the successful implementation of the three-year research and development programme.
This positive assessment marks the beginning of the next phase of the project. The consortium has now entered the maintenance period, during which the partners will continue to follow the post-project development of the technologies, assess market opportunities and explore potential applications both in Hungary and internationally.
The strength of the HWP network
For the Hungarian Water Partnership, the successful completion of this project is also an excellent example of the value of a strong national water industry network.
Bringing together companies and research organisations with complementary expertise allows individual capabilities to be transformed into more comprehensive solutions. Cooperation of this kind strengthens innovation, supports the development of internationally competitive Hungarian water technologies and creates new opportunities for joint market development.
The project also reflects a broader objective of HWP: to provide a professional environment where members can identify synergies, combine technological and scientific expertise, develop joint solutions and translate Hungarian innovation into domestic and international business opportunities.
